Never Forget

On the tragic day of September 11th, 2001, I felt compelled to create a tribute for those who lost their lives and the brave first responders. The image on the left is one I found online from that day, and it resonated with me as a strong symbol of resilience. A few years later, I sought to craft a new tribute to commemorate that day, which is represented on the right. Once again, I discovered an image that inspired me to combine various elements, leading to the creation of this piece.

Black Lives Matter - 11 x 17

This artwork represents a new venture for me, focusing on political themes. Specifically, it addresses political issues through the lens of sports. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, initiated a peaceful protest that inspired many others to follow suit. He began his demonstration by kneeling during the national anthem, an act that many perceived as disrespectful to the nation and its flag. However, Kaepernick's intention was far from that; his protest aimed to highlight police brutality against Black individuals in America, a stance that ultimately cost him his NFL career. Despite facing significant backlash, Kaepernick remained steadfast in his beliefs, shining a light on a problem that has persisted for decades. The tragic death of George Floyd later ignited the Black Lives Matter movement nationwide, echoing the very issues Kaepernick sought to address in 2016. In my piece, Kaepernick is depicted at the forefront, kneeling with a tattered American flag in the background. The damaged flag symbolizes the deep divisions within our country. Inscribed on the flag are the words "I CAN'T BREATHE," a poignant reference to Floyd's death at the hands of a police officer. Through this artwork, I aim to raise awareness about the inequalities faced by people of color in our society, while also emphasizing that every life matters, regardless of skin color or religion.

For my senior art class final project in college, we were tasked with developing a theme or concept. I created two distinct pieces. The first artwork (on the left) consists of 16 individual panels (each measuring 18 x 24) that together form a cohesive image, while also standing alone as separate works. This piece reflects my identity; for those unfamiliar with me during my college years, it encapsulates who I am. It combines acrylic paint, graphite, and sharpies, featuring a basketball court as the backdrop, with me at the center holding a basketball and a globe, symbolizing my world. Each corner of the piece illustrates different aspects of my personality and artistic perspective. The second artwork (on the right) also centers on my experiences but conveys a different narrative. Following a serious bicycle accident that could have had dire consequences, the skull at the center represents my injuries. The hands cradling melting clocks serve as a reminder to cherish our time before it slips away. This piece emphasizes the importance of savoring each day and not taking any moment for granted, as a single misstep can lead to significant loss.
