My name is Matt Kantor, and I've had a deep passion for creating art since I was young. Alongside art, basketball has also been a significant part of my life; I've played and coached throughout the years. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Art from Warren Wilson College, where I not only played college basketball but also honed my artistic skills. My college experience was transformative, allowing me to develop my craft and experiment with various art mediums.
In my early artistic endeavors, I often used Sharpies, which allowed me to showcase vibrant colors. During my time at college, I delved into fine art mediums such as oils, charcoal, mixed media, printmaking, conte, and the timeless graphite. While I have a strong affinity for graphite, I've recently started incorporating colored pencils into my work, reintroducing color into my creations. My goal is to capture fleeting moments in life—those simple yet inspiring instances.
A central theme in my work is balance, which I believe is fundamental to our world. I often depict flowers, as they embody the dualities of life: joy and sorrow, love and loss. The use of graphite, conte, oil paints, acrylics, charcoal, and colored pencils not only breathes life into my art but also reflects the emotions we experience. Sometimes, it's the simplest pieces that can profoundly impact one's mood or perspective.
My inspiration comes from life itself. I strive to carve out my own voice, creating meaningful expressions for the world to engage with. Art serves as a medium through which an artist conveys their viewpoint, story, or idea, while the true essence of the work remains known only to the artist, leaving the audience to interpret it in their own way. Each piece I create serves as a stepping stone, guiding me toward new interests and challenges, while also inviting viewers to connect with the work and discover their own meanings.
